Country Quest Portugal has been a project in the making for over 2 years now. Let me cut a long story short, and tell you how we got here.
2016, East Sussex, UK. Brexit was just voted on, Daniel and Pia felt it for the first time. Racism – it was almost surreal, the morning after the results were delivered it was as if the English were given a license to be racist. I’d never expected my colleagues to start making comments..” So, when are you leaving? ” It was great to have you, but nicer to see you go” ” Shall we create the Europeans here their own entrance and exit so they can start practicing Brexit.”
In all honesty we had both been fairly unhappy in our jobs, it was hard work with little prospect or chance for personal development. We were seeking for a change anyway, and brexit was just the final push. The straw that broke the camels back, so to speak.
Who knew, that this change would be so rapid and end up being completely life changing.
Fast forward a few months. We packed our bags, sold all our furniture and everything we could do with out, packed two cars full and moved to Portugal. We had big ambitions and a wealthy investor behind us. This was going to be a great success!
Seeking for a property that suited us and the newly purchased herd of horses was not an easy task. We found options, but time and time again our wealthy investor came up with excuses on why the purchases were not being concluded and we were moved from pillar to post.
2 and a half years and a considerable amount of our savings was lost on this limbo, until it became apparent that our wealthy investor was not so wealthy after all and we would be better off without her.
So, here we are. After many disappointments, high hopes and hard work lost… as determined as ever. We did not come this far to give up now.
We have found ourselves a nice house in a great location and we can now finally make a start. It will be humble to start with. But like with anything in life, good things come to those who work their butts off!
So now, here’s to new beginnings. To new starts, to never giving up on your dreams, to staying strong, determined and courageous!
